Pax
in Terra
Crossroads Academy Students, Lyme, New Hampshire, USA
"We
had a call for submissions of possible quotes for a banner shape
and, this being a school based on the "classics", it was
not surprising that "Pax in Terra" won the decision. We
accumulated the words for "Peace" in many languages, and
the best letterers took on the job of painting on the chosen words.
Then
came the procedure of getting hundreds of hand prints on the mural.
Each class and person had to be scheduled to come to the Art Room,
and other people had to be there to help ink hands and clean up
afterwards. The students were very good about volunteering help.
By
this time we really wanted to know where the art was to go, and
so we were tremendously excited to learn that it would travel to
Burundi, in east Africa. We all looked up Burundi and found it on
the map. Then we had to make sure that we had the words for "Peace"
in all three languages spoken in Burundi. The two missing were painted
on the mural with another few to balance it visually - and last
we painted a red line between the two locations to show the travel
path.
When
the mural was finished we displayed it on the wall in a local cooperative
grocery store, Hanover Co-op, where many people saw and complimented
the artwork.
The
whole project was a wonderful experience and I look forward to doing
it again."
